matt lauer crisis experts Matt Lauer wanted crisis experts hired for 'Today' mess report“Today” host Matt Lauer has been in the a lot lately, from the tales of Ann Curry’s ouster from the morning show, to a former “Today” intern who said he was “not so nice,” to reports that the network is looking to replace him on the show.

What’s a guy to do? Well, according to a report in the New York Post, Lauer wanted a top-notch crisis management public relations firm to help his stream of bad press following Curry’s goodbye on “Today.” But sources say the Comcast-owned network refused.

“Since they haven’t hired an outside agency,” says a source close to “Today,” “he’s taking matters into his own hands.”

Another source adds, “They were looking for [outside firms] in the fall. But it was a case of the higher-ups at Comcast not wanting to bring someone in.”

A PR person tells Page Six that this was a mistake on Comcast’s part.

“Matt should be seen as a much more sympathetic figure. They’ve made some real mistakes, obvious ones, and they have no plan,” says the spin doctor. “As soon as you become the highest-paid anchor, you have a target on your tush.”

Lauer, meanwhile, has reportedly been poking fun at the situation. The Post says at the UJA Federation of New York event this month, Lauer was heard joking, “I have a lower Q rating than polio right now” and “Who can forget when [Katie Couric] was co-host of the ‘Today’ show? She got a colonoscopy on TV … two weeks ago, I got one in the New York Times.”
