Max Joseph is leaving “Catfish” — but not forever. The MTV reality hit’s silver-fox Internet detective is taking a five-episode hiatus from Season 4 to direct his first feature film (starring Zac Efron), and MTV has recruited five very different personalities to partner with Nev Schulman in his absence.
MTV president Susanne Daniels tells reporters at the winter TV press tour that MTV personality Charlamagne, Miss Teen USA Cassidy Wolf, recording artist Angel Haze, YouTuber Tyler Oakley and actor Alex Shaffer will team up with Schulman as “guest detectives” for five weeks before Joseph’s return. Don’t worry — Joseph will stick around for the rest of the season.
Joseph’s feature film directorial debut is “We Are Your Friends,” which he also co-wrote, starring Efron as a DJ in the electronic dance music scene. The film shot in Los Angeles in the second half of 2014.
The “Catfish” star tells MTV that his work on the reality show actually helped inform his script for the movie, which goes inside the EDM world.
“In a weird way, a lot of the themes have come out of ‘Catfish.’ I wrote this with my writing partner while making the show, and every day, we’d be in a different part of America going into random people’s homes and entering their lives,” he says. “We were really seeing a cross-section of the world, and the themes of the movie have been directly inspired by all the things we saw.”
Joseph raves to MTV about working with Efron on the movie. “He’s amazing. He is a world-class person. He’s the first person to say hello to everyone and he’s the furthest thing from a prima donna. He’s extremely professional, always in a good mood and keeps things light. He loves the crew. He’s a trooper, and we have a good time,” he says.
“Catfish” Season 4 premieres Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.
