mcdonalds islamic diet lawsuit settled McDonald's Islamic diet lawsuit settled in Michigan

McDonald’s has reached a tentative settlement deal to compensate the Muslim community in the Detroit area after claims that two local franchises falsely advertised their food as halal, or prepared in accordance with strict Islamic dietary law.
The Associated Press reports the restaurants advertises that they sell exclusively halal McChicken sandwiches and Chicken McNuggets, but a consumer named as a plaintiff in the class action lawsuit claims he discovered when the locations ran out of halal products, they were substituted with non-halal foods.
Islamic law forbids pork consumption, and requires that God’s name be invoked before an animal is slaughtered for consumption.
The Dearborn franchisee, Finley’s Management Co., says in a settlement notice that they have “a carefully designed system for preparing and serving halal such that halal chicken products are labeled, stored, refrigerated, and cooked in halal-only areas.” They also say they train their employees in a manner that “requires strict adherence to the process.”
A final hearing will determine the split of the settlement proceeds, that will be divvied up between the consumer who launched the investigation, the attorneys in the case, a Detroit health clinic, and the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn.
The settlement amount is expected to be around $675,000.
