Malachy the Pekingese is 11 pounds of winner. On Tuesday (Feb. 14), Malachy won Best in Show at the 2012 Westminster Dog Show, beating out more than 2,000 dogs of several types: cute, cuddly, sporty, goofy and massive.*
Malachy is four years old and this latest win is his 115th best in show title. He actually came in second at Westminster last year. After his win, he chilled out back stage on a cool pack as handler David Fitzpatrick spritzed him with water from a spray bottle, reports the New York Times.
“This is the year of the dragon,” proclaimed co-owner Iris Love. “We are in the presence of an imperial Pekingese. That doesn’t happen very often.”
Pekingese, often referred to as Lion Dogs, originated in China more than 2,000 years ago. The American Kennel Club describes Peke’s as “good natured, opinionated and affectionate family companions.”
After the hype dies down and he’s done his media tour, Malachy will return home to East Berlin, Pa., where he will — according to the Associated Press — be a hot breeding commodity.
“He’ll probably chase squirrels and he’ll be pampered,” Fitzpatrick tells the Associated Press.
