mel gibson joe eszterhas Mel Gibson: Joe Eszterhas says he has a recording of 'violent harangue'The war of words between Mel Gibson and screenwriter Joe Eszterhas continued Friday (April 13) with Eszterhas appearing on the “Today” show to reiterate his claims of Gibson’s erratic behavior.

A quick refresher: Gibson and Eszterhas teamed up last year to work on a film about the Maccabees, who reclaimed the temple of Jerusalem from Greek control (which led to the celebration of Hanukkah) and expanded the Judean empire in what is now Israel. They said they envisioned the film as a “Jewish ‘Braveheart.'”

Cut to this week, when a letter Eszterhas wrote to Gibson, asking for his script back and alleging several scary outbursts on Gibson’s part, leaked online. Gibson then denied Eszterhas’ claims, which led to the writer’s “Today” appearance.

In the segment — which you can watch below — Eszterhas says his 15-year-old son, Nick, recorded Gibson during a “violent harangue” while they were in Costa Rica to work on the Maccabees script. He adds that others at Gibson’s house in Costa Rica witnessed similar behavior, and that he wants to refute Gibson’s claim that the original letter was full of “utter fabrications,” in Gibson’s words.

“He says these are utter fabrications, and then two paragraphs later he apologizes,” Eszterhas says. “… If they’re fabrications, what is he apologizing for? I don’t like to be called a liar.”
