Mel Turpin, a former NBA player, has died of apparent suicide. He was 49.

The 6-foot-11 player was found in his North Lexington, Kentucky house Thursday afternoon (July 8) when police responded to a personal injury call, reports the San Francisco Chronicle. His wife was not home at the time.

There was no word on how Turpin commit suicide or whether he left a note.

According to the New York Times, his sister Margaret Burrus had said Turpin was trying to keep his diabetes in check.

Melvin Harrison “Mel” Turpin was born in Lexington in December 1960. As a center, he had a strong college basketball career and then became the sixth player picked in the 1984 NBA draft that also included Michael Jordan, Hakeem Olajuwon, John Stockton and Charles Barkley.
