And here we thought the whole birther issue thing was so 2008. Nope.
Since announcing that he might possibly consider running for president in 2012, Donald Trump has been talking about the Obama birther issue to anyone who will listen or, in the case of Meredith Vieira, anyone who has no choice but to listen.
In a one-on-one interview with Trump that aired Thursday (April 7) on NBC’s “Today Show,” Vieira herself actually brought up the issue with Trump, giving him the platform to hold forth on why he believes President Obama was not born in the United States.
His proof? “I actually have people who have been studying it,” says Trump. Despite, as noted by The Cutline, the fact that the birther issue has been “thoroughly debunked.”
Trump, who claims he’s considering a run for the presidency because he’s “smart” and has “a lot of common sense,” also said “[Obama’s] grandmother in Kenya said he was born in Kenya and she was there and witnessed the birth.” Another claim which has already been proven false.
As for Vieira, she’s coming under fire for letting Trump steam-roll his way through the interview without questioning many of The Donald’s questionable “facts.” It’s worth pointing out that Vieira does try to check Trump and challenge his assertions, but she doesn’t go after Trump or hold his feet to the fire when he starts spouting out debunked information. Surely Vieira and “Today” had time thoroughly prepare for a topic that she herself brought up.
Could it be that her mind is on her next move? She’s rumored to be one of two “Today” anchors looking to jump ship.
When asked why he hasn’t formally announced his candidacy yet, Trump replied that he isn’t allowed to formally declare until the end of the “Celebrity Apprentice” season or else (perish the thought) she show could get yanked off the air.
