michael douglas matt damon kiss behind the candelabra hbo Michael Douglas: Kissing Matt Damon in 'Behind the Candelabra' was 'comfortable'

Michael Douglas and Matt Damon did not hold back when it came time to make, “Behind the Candelabra,” the new HBO biopic about Liberace. That means that viewers can expect to see the two veteran actors lock lips quite a few times in the upcoming movie.

“Once you get that first kiss in, you are comfortable,” Douglas tells Vulture. “Matt and I didn’t rehearse the love scenes. We said, ‘Well — we’ve read the script, haven’t we?'”

He continues, “The hardest thing about sex scenes is that everybody is a judge. I don’t know the last time you murdered somebody or blew anyone’s brains out, but everyone has had sex and probably this morning, which means everyone has an opinion on how it should be done.”

Director Steven Soderbergh says that, while he took liberties with the behind-the-scenes aspect of Liberace (Douglas) and Scott Thorson’s (Damon) relationship, he wanted it to come from an authentic place.

“The film is about a part of his life that he didn’t share with anyone; it is an act of imagination, but I wanted it to be sincere,” Soderbergh says. “I didn’t want it to be unkind, because everyone loved Liberace. He was the nicest man.”

“Behind the Candelabra” premieres on May 26 on HBO.
