That’s exactly what happened on Tuesday night (June 4) when a gay rights protestor interrupted Mrs. Obama’s speech at a Democratic National Committee fundraising event in Washington, DC. The First Lady threatened to leave if her heckler didn’t stop.
According to the Associated Press, Michelle Obama was about halfway through her remarks about educational issues when an activist in attendance at the private event began to shout in support of an executive order that would protect those working for federal contractors from gender discrimination. President Obama had pledged to sign this order back in 2008 but has not yet done so.
Mrs. Obama did not put up with her heckler for long. She reportedly said, “Listen to me, or you can take the mic. But I’m leaving.”
The audience shouted for the First Lady to stay at this point, while the protestor was escorted out. The Christian Science Monitor has identified the heckler as Ellen Sturtz, an activist with the gay rights group, GetEQUAL. Sturtz had purchased a ticket to the fundraiser.
