mindy mccready suicide billy mcknight Mindy McCready's suicide 'didn't come as a major shock,' says ex Billy McKnightCountry singer Mindy McCready committed suicide this past weekend, allegedly shooting herself on the very porch where her fiance David Wilson killed himself last month.

McCready’s ex Billy McKnight, who has known her since the late 1990s and who is the father of her 6-year-old son Zander, tells “Today” that the suicide did not come as a huge surprise.

“As sad as it is, it didn’t come as a major shock ’cause she’s just been battling demons for so long,” says McKnight. “Of course, I was around her when she attempted suicide twice, so I knew it was in her. I feel for her mother and her family and especially my son, but I can’t say that it shocked me.”

McCready battled McKnight for custody of Zander just over a year ago, winning custody of the child in December 2011.

“This whole thing — he shouldn’t have been taken from me to begin with,” says McKnight. “He was taken out of Florida. He has a happy home here, I can provide for him. Enough is enough. He’s up there all alone, he has no family. He has plenty of family who love him here. He needs to come home.”

And Zane, I don’t know what’s going to happen with Zane, but if he does go to Ft. Myers, where [Mindy’s family] is from, it’s only an hour and a half difference, I’d like to keep those boys, being brothers, together,” McKnight continues. “Try to turn my son’s life around. He’s had a rough first six years. He deserves better than this. My heart’s broken for him right now.”

McKnight goes on to say that McCready never should have been released from the treatment program she was sent to after her fiance committed suicide.

“I don’t know how she got out. I don’t have those exact details. Mindy does have a way of talking herself out of situations. Perhaps staying in there and grieving around people who could help her over the death of her fiance could have calmed her down,” says McKnight.

“But the demons she hasn’t beaten were there and until she faced them, something was going to happen. Everyone who knows her personally knew that. She would’ve had to probably stay somewhere for quite a long time, until she realy healed and started looking into herself for getting better.”

McCready was 37 years old and leaves behind son Zander, 6, and son Zayne, nine months.
