Congratulations to Kentucky girl Alexandria Mills. Too bad your most recent victory has been overshadowed.
The 18-year-old pageant beauty nabbed the title of Miss World, the third U.S. contestant to do so ever, Saturday night (Oct. 30) in Sanya, China, but much of the buzz surrounding a frontrunner who didn’t even make the Top 5.
Miss Norway, the 23-year-old Mariann Birkedal, was the odds-on favorite, but according to the Daily Mail, host country China was not too thrilled with the Nobel committee, which had bestowed jailed Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo the Peace Prize.
So far, there’s no evidence of any tampering with the scores, just a general suspicion that Miss Norway’s 6/5 odds didn’t carry her to the finals. Mills’ odds were 7/1. Miss Botswana Emma Wareus came in second, while Miss Venezuela Adriana Vasini came in third.
