modern family jan 9 ratings 'Modern Family,' 'The Middle' and 'Last Man Standing' renewed at ABC, plus more cancellations and pilot pickupsWave after wave of news about ABC’s schedule for 2013-14 broke late Friday (May 10). After the first rush of series renewals and pilot pickups, along with the cancellation of “Happy Endings,” here’s what went down.

Series renewals: “Modern Family,” the network’s highest-rated series, will be back for a fifth season. Fellow Wednesday night comedy “The Middle” (also for Season 5) and Tim Allen’s “Last Man Standing” (Season 3) are returning too.

Cancellations: Despite a ratings uptick late in the season, “Body of Proof” is done at ABC. First-year comedies “Malibu Country” and “How to Live With Your Parents (for the Rest of Your Life)” are also gone, as is low-rated rookie drama “Red Widow.”

Pilot pickups: Comedies “Back in the Game,” starring James Caan and Maggie Lawson; “Trophy Wife,” with Malin Akerman, Bradley Whitford and Marcia Gay Harden; and “Mixology,” featuring interlocking stories of 10 single people at a bar on a single night, all got the green light.

On the drama side, orders went to “Betrayal,” starring Hannah Ware (“Boss”) as a woman whose husband (Chris Johnson) and lover (Stuart Townsend) are on opposite sides of a high-profile murder case; “Lucky 7,” about a group of gas-station employees who win a lottery jackpot; “Killer Women,” about the only female member (Tricia Helfer) of the Texas Rangers; “Mind Games” (formerly “Influence”), about two brothers (Steve Zahn and Christian Slater) who run a unique consulting agency; and “Resurrection” (formerly “The Returned”), in which residents of a Missouri town are shocked when their long-dead loved ones return to them. Spinoff “Once Upon a Time in Wonderland” is coming too.
