anna faris sadie calvano mom cbs 'Mom': Sadie Calvano breaks down Violet's big decision and the possible falloutMonday’s (March 3) episode of “Mom” pulled a swerve on the audience, taking viewers once again into the emotional territory the show has become increasingly adept at mining.

The episode, “Sonograms and Tube Tops,” dealt mostly with Christy (Anna Faris) planning a baby shower for her daughter, Violet (Sadie Calvano), as she fears Violet isn’t as excited about becoming a mom as she should be. Turns out there’s a good reason for that: Violet has decided to give the baby up for adoption.

“Violet’s getting really close to … the end of her pregnancy, and she makes an extremely brave choice to give the baby up for adoption and breaks the cycle that has been with her family of having a baby young,” Calvano tells Zap2it. “Violet at the end of the day is a really smart girl. She gets good grades and tries in school, and it’s arguable that she could really do something in life, go wherever she wants to go and get into college. She chooses in this episode to hopefully pursue that dream, which is not an easy thing to do but definitely exciting.”

The news hits both Christy and her own mother, Bonnie (Allison Janney), like a punch in the heart, as Christy puts it. Christy initially — and selfishly — mourns for the loss of her “do-over baby,” but she comes around after imagining what Violet’s life might be in a flash-forward scene that put all three actresses in old(er)-age makeup.

“Oh my, yeah, it really was something,” Calvano says of the scene. “I sat in [makeup] for about two hours of prosthetics that morning, and then, taking different pieces that they had built and just plastering them onto my face, that really made me into a different person, you know? It was unbelievable — I couldn’t recognize myself in the mirror. They did some amazing, amazing work. Horrifying, but amazing. So, yeah, it was fun, and not just for me — for Allison and Anna too. It was such an adventure and so much fun.”

Naturally, such a big decision will have repercussions down the line. “It’s rough, you know? Not only for Violet deciding to give up this baby, but it also means that [Christy] and [Bonnie] were expecting to become grandparents, and they’re losing something,” Calvano says. “I think that Anna really expected in this episode that not only was this baby supposed to be like a new member for [the family], but it was also kind of a chance for us to get it right. So it’s definitely a tough decision, and I’m hoping you guys will get to see our journey.”

Part of that journey will also involve her boyfriend, Luke (Spencer Daniels). After an off-screen meeting with Luke and his family, Violet storms home with news that his parents want to adopt the child, after earlier in the season pushing Violet away.

“People react differently, but I think at the end of the day, Luke and Violet really lvoe each other,” Calvano says. “So I’m hoping the audience will get to see the power of love, as they say.”
