ABC premiered a new police procedural Monday night (May 20) in “Motive,” a series that purports to focus on the whys of a crime moreso than the whos, since the show will reveal to the audience at the top of every hour the identities of both the victim and the killer.
In the premiere episode, high school science teacher Mr. Martin (Joe McIntyre) is killed by his student, Tom (Tyler Johnston), seemingly as a “creeping” expedition gone wrong. Except that’s not it at all — Mr. Martin found out about Tom’s private, dark thoughts and Tom couldn’t bear the thought of no longer being invisible. When he broke into Mr. Martin’s house to get his school bag back, he ended up bludgeoning Martin to death with a trophy.
Did it hook you? If not, we will ask that you tune back in Thursday, May 23, when the show moves to its regular timeslot of Thursday nights at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC. The second episode features the city mayor as the killer and his niece as the victim and it made for a much more interesting case, we thought.
But what did you think of the premiere? Do you think “Motive” is fun summer fare?
