melissa mccarthy insult new york observer identity thief rex reed gi Movie critic goes after Melissa McCarthy instead of just 'Identity Thief'

You can hate a movie. You can even hate an actor. But it’s not cool to attack an actor because he or she does not conform to your narrow view of beauty.

And yet, that’s what a movie critic for The New York Observer did in his review of Melissa McCarthy‘s new film, “Identity Thief.”

Rex Reed didn’t much care for “Identity Thief,” that much was certain. It’s less certain as to why Reed felt the need to refer to McCarthy as “cacophonous” and “tractor-sized.” But he did. It’s rather disgusting.

Most of the vitriol aimed at McCarthy — an Emmy winner for her work on “Mike and Molly” — comes at the end of the review. “Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids) is a gimmick comedian who has devoted her short career to being obese and obnoxious with equal success,” Reed writes.

Reed must not be a fan of “Gilmore Girls” if he doesn’t consider that 7-year series in McCarthy’s longevity as an actress. That, however, is not the point.

Before you jump to the conclusion that Reed just felt the need to destroy everyone involved with “Identity Thief,” check out what the critic said about McCarthy’s co-star, Jason Bateman. “How did an actor so charming, talented, attractive and versatile get stuck in so much dreck?” Reed asks.

We will, as Reed obviously did, ignore the many failures in the career of the indeed-talented Jason Bateman. After all, for every “Arrested Development,” there was a “Hogan Family.”

The fact that McCarthy is a heavy-set woman seems to be the difference here. Apparently, to some people, a woman is not allowed to achieve valid success if she isn’t pretty.

It’s that or else Rex Reed needs to watch more than one bad movie that Melissa McCarthy just happens to be in. May we suggest “Gilmore Girls”?
