We’ve got to hand it to her — Lady Gaga knows how to stay in character. She’s never without a gimmick, and at this year’s Video Music Awards on Sunday night, the gimmick was this: Gaga stayed home, and instead, she sent her on-again off-again lover, Jo Calderone.
On the morning of the event, she tweeted “28.08.11 Creativity is the greatest rebellion in existence. Osho.” After that, the only Gaga tweet of the night came from @JoCalderone – a shot of his VMA shoes.
She appeared in drag as Jo for her performance of “You and I,” and kept up the character all night — even flirting shamelessly with Britney Spears as Brit accepted her Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. “I used to hang posters of her on my wall and touch myself while I was laying in bed,” said “Calderone” as he introduced her.
Gaga kept up the character even while accepting the award for Best Female Video — perhaps a sly suggestion that it may be time for MTV to drop the gender categories altogether.
One person who definitely dug Gaga’s act? Karate kid Ralph Macchio. Jo Calderone strongly resembled Macchio’s character Johnny from the 1983 film “The Outsiders.” So strongly, in fact, that Macchio shot onto the Twitter trending topics. “Stay Gold, Gaga!” he tweeted.
