nashville paleyfest charles esten connie britton hayden panettiere 'Nashville' at Paleyfest 2013: 10 highlights from the show's panel

“Nashville” is one of the shows lucky enough to be featured at the 2013 PaleyFest hosted by Los Angeles’ Paley Center for Media. With many of the actors — plus executive producers Callie Khouri and Dee Johnson — present, we learned a lot about the show during its panel on Saturday (March 9).

Here are 10 highlights — including a few spoilers — from the panel.

Remember that puppy Deacon (Charles Esten) got as a birthday present? He is indeed keeping it, although the guitarist runs into problems quickly when the dog remains fussy despite lots of country songs. When Deacon takes the dog to the vet, however, he gets a surprise of the romantic variety.

Sometimes, sleeping with a guy in mourning is a bad choice. Scarlett (Clare Bowen) is about to find that out when she and Gunnar (Sam Palladio) deal with the morning after. How does Gunnar deal? Let’s just say the words, “We slept together. It doesn’t mean anything,” come out of his mouth.

Don’t hold your breath on a happily-ever-after for Deacon and Rayna (Connie Britton). Even with the divorce, this pair of star-crossed lovers will have their issues. Esten addressed it this way at the panel: “She’s the one for me… But does that always work out?”

Speaking of Deacon and Rayna, we also shouldn’t expect any flashbacks of their history together. Esten resorted to jokes when asked about the possibility, saying “First we have to check with special effects” about ways to make the actors look young enough.

Clare Bowen is a classically trained singer who doesn’t really like to use a microphone. It was therefore amusing during PaleyFest that hers immediately cut out and had to be replaced.

When asked about the possibility of a “Nashville” concert tour, the cast and producers casually mentioned that the idea had been considered and might happen at some point in the future.

Show creator Callie Khouri wrote the character of Rayna with Connie Britton in mind, even though she didn’t know if the actress would work out. “I had no idea if she could sing, but she had the hair,” Khouri said. Britton promptly tossed that incredible hair around in agreement.

If you think that excellent birthday party will make Juliette (Hayden Panettiere) any nicer to her assistant, you are very wrong.

Despite their awesome singing and chemistry, Clare Bowen and Sam Palladio only met for the first time when they first sang “If I Didn’t Know Better” before the pilot episode.

You know all those big arena concert scenes? Most of that is pre-shot footage and special effects. But when we see the singers on the stage with an audience surrounding them, “Nashville” can use up to 500-600 extras while filming.

“Nashville” airs Wednesdays at 10pm on ABC.
