powers boothe nashville season 2 'Nashville' Season 2: EP Callie Khouri talks unpopular political story lines as Powers Boothe demoted from series regular

As “Nashville” Season 2 draws closer, more and more characters are being added to the roster. But one face we’ll be seeing less of is Rayna Jaymes’ political, powerful, manipulative, at-most-times villainous father Lamar Wyatt as Powers Boothe has been demoted from series regular for Season 2, TV Line reports. Additionally, Robert Ray Wisdom, who played Lamar and Teddy’s political rival/Deacon’s sponsor Coleman, also won’t be back as a regular.

Though both actors will appear on a recurring basis — with Boothe appearing in the season premiere — the reason for the demotion is a simple one: the showrunners are listening to what the audience wants.

“When we started the show we really wanted the Nashville political scene to be more of a character,” executive producer Callie Khouri tells Zap2it. “But people did not seem to really respond to that in the way that we had hoped. It was an election year when we started and by the time we got though it, nobody wanted to hear anything about politics — Nashville, local, or otherwise. So we turned all those stories into personal stories.”

Lamar became less of a political foil and more of a flawed father figure at the end of Season 1 as a result of his heart attack. He revealed his wife’s infidelity to Rayna, and though he lost his political power he became more important to the show via his relationship with his daughters.

As for Wisdom, his part will most likely be more focused on his sponsorship of Deacon now that he fell off the wagon and landed Rayna in a coma.

“Nashville” Season 2 premieres Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
