natalie wood getty 2 Natalie Wood's death certificate changed by coroner's officeAuthorities have changed Natalie Wood‘s death certificate after opening a new inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the actress’ demise in 1981, according to a copy of the certificate obtained by the AP.

The document was changed from “accidental drowning” to “drowning and other undetermined factors” and now also states that the circumstances in which Wood ended up in the waters off Catalina Island have not been “clearly established.”

Theses changes come nine months after the sheriff’s department renewed their investigation into her death. Chief of Detectives William McSweeney says that detectives still have work to do on the case, but that doesn’t necessarily mean any more information will be forthcoming.

“We don’t close these cases. These cases have active periods and more passive periods. We’re moving toward the end of an active period,” says McSweeney.

Part of the issue in not being able to determine Wood’s exact cause of death is because Wood’s then-husband Robert Wagner and their friend, actor Christopher Walken, have given conflicting versions of what happened on the yacht the three were aboard that night.

The ship’s captain, Dennis Davern, has said he heard Wagner and Wood arguing and believes Wagner is responsible for her death, but authorities have said he is not a suspect.
