natasha bedingfield donna summer tribute Natasha Bedingfield's Donna Summer tribute gets short shrift at Billboard Music Awards 2012The 2012 Billboard Music Awards “honored” the late singer Donna Summer, who passed away three days ago from lung cancer. And we say “honored” because it felt like they decided to squeeze it into the show about 10 minutes before it happened.

Singer Natasha Bedingfield took the stage and had to introduce herself, as she was the one doing the “tribute.” She also was stumbling over her intro, though maybe there was a teleprompter problem.

Bedingfield started to sing “Last Dance,” Summer’s 1978 disco hit that is a great tribute song, while photographs of Donna played behind Bedingfield on a screen. So that was fine – but then just as Bedingfield got the fun, fast part, the show cut away to promote a tribute to Taylor Swift and then cut to commercial.

Well done, show. A Billboard Music Tribute: When you care enough to send the very best. Seriously, we know she just died three days ago, but if the Grammys can slap a Whitney tribute together in a few hours time, surely three days is enough for Billboard.
