nazanin boniadi tom cruise getty Nazanin Boniadi 'deeply traumatized' by Tom Cruise Scientology audition process, claims Vanity Fair writer Maureen OrthOne of the biggest news stories out of this week is the Vanity Fair article that claims Tom Cruise‘s relationships are found via an audition process through the Church of Scientology, of which Cruise is a high-profile member.

The Church claims the article is “hogwash,” but the Vanity Fair article author Maureen Orth spoke with “Today” Wednesday (Sept. 5) and says it most certainly is not.

“Scientology does not know everybody I talked to, for one thing. But all of my sources in this article, with very few exceptions, are on the record. These are people who are very high up in the church,” says Orth. “Some of them are still Scientologists. They have gripes against the current leadership of Scientology, but they are not against the religion, necessarily.”

Orth goes on to detail the alleged audition and relationship between actress Nazanin Boniadi and Tom Cruise.

“Nazanin Boniadi was a very fervent Scientologist, a very beautiful young woman who was born in Iran, raised in London, graduated with honors from the University of California Irvine and wanted to be a doctor. She was applying to medical school,” says Orth, speaking about when Boniadi was allegedly recruited by the church for this project.

“She’d been asked about every part of her life. She had to write a 20-page singlespaced paper about her hopes, dreams, aspirations. All of her sex life was asked about,” says Orth. “She was getting audited for hours every day because she was being told that she was going to meet world leaders and there was a very special mission for the church.”

Orth also says that her sources tell her Boniadi had a boyfriend at the time, also a Scientologist, whose confidential audits (confessionals) were leaked to her, which caused her to break up with him.

And Boniadi gave the Tom Cruise relationship a shot, falling for him when he “turned on the charm,” says Orth. But when it didn’t work out, she was heartbroken and ended up being punished by the Church.

“My sources told me she was being told the fact that she was heartbroken was her fault … she was forbidden to ever mention this happened with Tom Cruise. But she did and as a result, she had to get down on her hands and knees and scrub toilets with a toothbrush.”

“She was very, very deeply traumatized by this whole experience,” Orth finishes.

When asked if she actually interviewed Boniadi, Orth would neither confirm nor deny that, since some of her sources only spoke with her on the condition of anonymity. She does say she tried to speak with Cruise and his ex-wives Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes.

“I tried. There were very few people that were willing to talk. But I must say we asked Tom Cruise and the head of Scientology several times for interviews and they refused,” says Orth.
