matt lauer ryan seacrest getty NBC President: Keeping Matt Lauer on 'Today' is 'number one priority'

In light of recent reports regarding Matt Lauer’s possible ousting from “Today” in favor of  Ryan Seacrest, NBC President Bob Greenblatt chose to dispel these stories at the Television Critics Association Winter press tour.
“I think it’s our hope and belief that Matt will stay on the show beyond the end of his contract,” Greeblatt says on Friday (Jan. 6). “I think the number one priority is Matt on the ‘Today’ show and simultaneously figuring out how to take Ryan and keep him in the family.”

It was in late 2011 that The Wall Street Journal reported that Seacrest might be in line to take over Lauer’s chair on the top-rated morning show. The “American Idol” host would certainly bring in a younger demographic and he knows how to deal with lighter fare, but he may not have the credibility that Lauer delivers during hard news segments.

If Seacrest does join “Today,” it also would likely mean a significant change to his entertainment empire, specifically the end of his long-running, syndicated morning radio show. Of course if Lauer does leave the NBC, there have been rumblings of a possibility with “60 Minutes.”

So Zappers, would you like to see this kind of shake up?
