marco polo series netflix Netflix eyeing 'Marco Polo' series from Weinstein Co.It seems Starz’s loss could stand to be Netflix’s gain.

The Weinstein Co. and Electus originally had a 10-episode straight-to-series order for their “Marco Polo” series at the pay cabler, a deal struck in January 2012, but after plans for the show to film in China (a first for a U.S. show) seemingly fell apart, Starz released the series back to the production houses.

Deadline reports that Netflix has made an offer for a nine-episode order of the original series about the 13th century explorer. Sources close to the negotiations insist there is no deal in place yet because Harvey Weinstein is also mulling about a feature film version of the project.

With China no longer a filming option, it seems the potential series will film in Malaysia. Seven scripts have been written, with casting on track to begin immediately for a production start in early 2014.

“Marco Polo” comes from creators John Fusco (“Young Guns”) and Dave Erickson (“Sons of Anarchy”) and tells the true story of the world’s greatest storyteller, an epic and cinematic adventure of high politics, masterful manipulation and deadly warfare. Young Marco Polo finds himself at the center of a brutal war between two empires in 13th century China, rife with close combat, romance and sexual intrigue, religious tension, political skullduggery and spectacular battles.

Are you hopeful the “Marco Polo” series will wind up on Netflix?
