netflix profiles Netflix 'Profiles' allow different users, more specific recommendations

Inaccurate movie and television suggestions: they’re a pain every Netflix subscriber who shares his or her account has felt. Your boyfriend watches one action movie, and the next thing that’s all your suggestion field is riddled with. You check out a classic Audrey Hepburn movie, and suddenly the only movies it thinks you want to see came out before the year 1970. Your brother watches anime, and then you’re only getting suggestions for Japanese cartoons. Well, no longer.

Netflix, at long last, is launching user profiles. The “Profiles” feature means when you login there will be a page specifying whether it’s you, your significant other, your family member or anyone else you have on your account watching. A maximum of five users can be added to each account.

So what does this mean for individual Netflix viewers? Once again, only your viewing habits will dictate your suggested films and television shows. In addition, you can set up profiles around themes, like “Date Night,” CNN Money reports. The profiles feature will link to users’ Facebook accounts.

The new “Profiles” feature will be made available on, the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, iOS devices and most smart TVs. It won’t appear on Nintendo Wii until the end of August, Google Android devices won’t be able to use the feature until late fall, and Roku users won’t have access until early 2014.
