HBO has released a second trailer for its movie “The Normal Heart,” and it delves deeper into the story of the early days of the HIV-AIDS epidemic in New York.

The 90-second trailer repeats a few scenes from an earlier, shorter teaser, but it also expands on them in showing the story of writer and activist Ned Weeks (Mark Ruffalo), who becomes increasingly vocal in his efforts to raise awareness and research funding for what was then an unnamed disease. You’ll also see more scene-setting of what life was like for gay New Yorkers in the early ’80s — the contrast between those early, sunny images and the growing dread as the disease takes hold is stark.

“The Normal Heart” also stars Julia Roberts, Matt Bomer, Taylor Kitsch, Jim Parsons and Jonathan Groff. Ryan Murphy (“Glee”) directed it, and Larry Kramer adapted his 1985 play — which is based on his own experiences and those of friends — for the film. It premieres May 25 on HBO.
