Lawson spoke to a jury at Isleworth Crown Court to set the record straight about her being a supposed “drug addict or habitual” user. “There are two times in my life when I have used cocaine,” she says, via Radar Online. “I concluded that I did not have a drug problem, I had a life problem, and I needed to attend to that and I did seek out a therapist.”
The first time Lawson says she used cocaine was when she found out her late husband John Diamond had terminal cancer, and she joined him in consuming the drug six times. Then she used it again in Summer 2010 after a friend gave it to her, and she found she was having a “very, very difficult time.”
In addition, Lawson admits to smoking marijuana, but says she is currently not on any drugs.
The drug allegations were brought to light in a fraud case against sisters Elisabetta and Francesca Grillo, two of Lawson’s former assistants who are accused of defrauding the chef and her ex-husband of about $480,000 during their decade of employment under the pair. Initial arguments claimed the sisters used Lawson and Saatchi’s credit cards to cover up Lawson’s drug use, but Saatchi later said he doesn’t believe that “for a second.”
During her time as a witness in the fraud case, Lawson says that Saatchi has been set on destroying her reputation ever since pictures of him supposedly choking her appeared online. “He said that if I didn’t go back to him and clear his name he would destroy me,” she says, adding that he spread “false allegations of drug use” against her. “It’s difficult for me, it’s very difficult for my children, but I want to do the right thing,” Lawson admits of her decision to stand as witness.
Lawson appears on ABC’s “The Taste,” which is slated to premiere on Jan 2.
