game of thrones michael mcelhatton roose bolton red wedding hbo Northern Ireland uses 'Game of Thrones' Red Wedding to promote tourismIt’s no secret that the majority of “Game of Thrones” is shot on location in Northern Ireland (it’s also shot in Croatia, Malta and Iceland, among other gorgeous countries).

That’s why it makes sense that Northern Ireland would pitch its country as a site tourists would want to visit because they are fans of “Game of Thrones.” It worked with New Zealand, right?
Except, of course, “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” movies didn’t have any events as traumatizing as the Red Wedding to use as a hook for getting visitors to the country they were filmed in.

The lesson to be taken from this seems to be to go visit Northern Ireland as much for the beautiful vistas as for revenge on the Boltons and the Freys. The North remembers!
“Game of Thrones” Season 4 premieres April 6 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO.
