naveen andrews once upon a time in wonderland 'Once Upon a Time in Wonderland's' Naveen Andrews: Jafar 'wasn't always evil'“Once Upon a Time in Wonderland” is back Thursday, Nov. 7 with a new episode after taking a week off with “The Serpent,” which star Naveen Andrews teases for Zap2it is going to give viewers some insight into Jafar and what exactly he is after.

In the last episode, it was revealed that the Red Queen and the Knave of Hearts were once Anastasia and Will Scarlet and they were in love. So we have to ask — does Jafar have a lost love in his background perhaps?

“Yes, he does and you’ll see that in the next episode,” says Andrews. “In the coming episode, what both [creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis] and I wanted to bring to the audience was a how and a why Jafar ends up the way he does.”
What sort of things that might have happened to him in childhood — the
idea that everyone has a childhood. He wasn’t always evil.”

Part of Jafar’s backstory will presumably involve discovering which rule of magic he is specifically targeting by going after Alice and her genie. But Andrews isn’t telling.

“I don’t want to give it away,” he laughs. “There is definitely something that he is going for — it’s his raison d’√™tre, if you like.”

“I think [‘Wonderland’] is very enjoyable, it’s quite outrageous really,” Andrews adds. “It’s very brave and daring to bring in, say, someone like Jafar from the ‘Arabian Nights’ to an English 19th-century classic and somehow create this sort of synthesis and it works.”

“Once Upon a Time in Wonderland” airs Thursday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
