rebecca mader once upon a time wicked witch of the west 'Once Upon a Time': [Spoiler] dies and the Wicked Witch of the West is on her wayHow did the fall finale showdown shake out in Storybrooke on “Once Upon a Time”? We hope you had your tissues handy.

There’s a spell Gold can do to switch Pan and Henry’s bodies back and then Regina will be able to destroy the curse. Hook, David, Neal and Tink go after the Black Fairy’s wand at the nunnery in order to do the spell and when they get there, they trap Pan’s shadow in the coconut and burn it, which restores the Blue Fairy back to life, yay!

The body-switching spell is successful, but when Regina gets hold of the spell scroll, she sees what she’ll have to do to make sure they don’t all die. Meanwhile, Pan and Mr. Gold have a confrontation in the shop after his spirit is restored and Pan is utterly cruel to his son.

But in the end, Gold stands up to him and kills them both with the dark one’s dagger in a heartbreaking final scene. Did they really just kill off Robert Carlyle? Gosh, I hope not. But what a way to go out. *tears*

Regina then drops another terrible bombshell — in order to keep them all from dying, she has to destroy the curse that created Storybrooke, which will send them all back to Fairytale Land, except Emma and Henry. Apparently Emma being the Savior keeps her from going too, since she was born in Fairytale Land.

But it’s about 10 minutes worth of tissue-using goodbyes, as Emma and Henry prepare to leave and never see any of the rest of their family and friends again. But they’re going to get to have their life together, because Regina is going to make it as if Emma never gave Henry up and they were always together.

They drive off as the purple mist swallows everyone up. And suddenly, it’s a year later. Henry and Emma are having breakfast and there’s a knock on the door. It’s Hook, who has come to find Emma because her family is in trouble. Of course, she has no idea who he is and so he tries to kiss her, but to no avail (more on that later). And that’s the end.

Thoughts & Tidbits

  • Did you watch the previews for when the show comes back in March? Because Rebecca Mader was shown as the Wicked Witch of the West, which is AWESOME. We were so hoping they’d get to L. Frank Baum’s material at some point.
  • The time jump is nice, since Jared Gilmore is starting to age out of his character. That will help considerably.
  • Did anybody else see the alarm clock at 8:15 and wish the dulcet tones of Mama Cass singing “Make Your Own Kind of Music” had started playing?
  • Does this mean that Emma and Hook aren’t true loves? Would his kiss have restored her memory if they were? Millions of Captain Swan fans the country over are wailing and gnashing their teeth.
  • What a great way to wrap this up and then create a new adventure for Emma and Henry, plus what a way to wring every last ounce of emotion out of everyone involved. I cried for like the entire last half of the episode, kudos to all the actors.

Mr. Gold: “I’m a villain and villains don’t get happy endings.”

Mary Margaret: “Happy endings aren’t always what we think they will be.”
