Transcendental meditation, or the practice of meditating while using a mantra, which is supposed to aid in relaxation and help keep anxiety in check, was in the spotlight on Sunday night’s “Oprah’s Next Chapter” on OWN.

For the special, Oprah Winfrey traveled to the small town of Fairfield, Iowa, which is known as the center of the transcendental movement in the United States. Many of the residents meditate every day, while a local school is The Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment, which uses
“consciousness-based education” to teach children from kindergarten to
12th grade everything from college prep to spiritual awakening.

As an Iowan, we can actually attest that Fairfield is a neat little place to visit and it’s cool that Oprah shined a light on the outside-the-box way of life they’ve got going on there. If you’re curious about transcendental meditation or the Maharishi school, it’s definitely worth a trip. You could also swing north and hit the Field of Dreams.
