Allure has put out its annual nude issue, which celebrates the naked female form.
In 2015, the magazine got some TV heavy hitters — “Orange Is the New Black” star Laverne Cox, “Vikings” star Katheryn Winnick, “Sleepy Hollow” star Nicole Beharie, “Dallas” star Jordana Brewster and “The Returned” star Sandrine Holt.
Cox initially turned Allure down, but then decided that it’s important for her as a black, transgender woman to show that she’s just as beautiful as everyone else.
“I felt this could be really powerful for the communities that I represent,” Cox tells the magazine. “Black women are not often told that we’re beautiful unless we align with certain standards. Trans women certainly are not told we’re beautiful. Seeing a black transgender woman embracing and loving everything about herself might be inspiring to some other folks.”
Winnick encourages all women to try something like this, even if it’s just in the privacy of their own homes. “Everybody should do this, in their home, hopefully with their significant other. If you can feel good in your own skin, why hide it?”
In the behind-the-scenes video below, the actresses talk about how empowered and confident the photoshoots made them feel.
The Allure issue is on newsstands now.
