The opening of the 2013 Academy Awards was a lot like an episode of “Family Guy”: It had some tasteless jokes, musical numbers, a couple of cutaways and random celebrity guests, all filtered through the mind of Seth MacFarlane.
None of that is much of a surprise: MacFarlane was wise to go with what works for him on the biggest stage of his career.
The opening of the show started out feeling very much like a throwback to the Oscars of old, with MacFarlane rattling off a string of mostly funny one-liners about the movie business (“The story [of ‘Argo’] was so top secret that the film’s director is unknown to the academy”).
And then Captain Kirk showed up. William Shatner, in full Enterprise regalia, descended on a giant video screen for an entirely too-long bit about how MacFarlane was going to screw up the Oscars royally, with cutaways to a rejected song (“We Saw Your Boobs”) and a sequence about how Seth thought Sally Field was hot back in her “Flying Nun” days.
In between, MacFarlane showed off his smooth singing voice, doing “The Way You Look Tonight” while Charlize Theron and Channing Tatum danced. He also joined Daniel Radcliffe and Joseph Gordon-Levitt for a rendition of “High Hopes.”
Some of it worked quite well — off-color as it was, “We Saw Your Boobs” was very funny — and some of it fell kind of flat. You know, kind of like your average “Family Guy” episode.
