The Oscar season and Groundhog Day are upon us. Both Anne Hathaway and Punxsutawney Phil will be up early on Tuesday, Feb. 2, but for different reasons.
In the case of the “Rachel Getting Married” star, she’ll be up at 5:30 a.m. PT to announce the nominations for the 82nd Annual Academy Awards.
This year, the Academy has opened up the best picture field to 10 when it’s been limited to five in the past 60 years. We’re hoping this means that a few comedies, indie films and maybe action films will get consideration.
James Cameron’s “Avatar” and Kathryn Bigelow’s “The Hurt Locker” are shoo-ins for that category as the big winners so far during this awards season. Expect to see “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire,” “Up in the Air,” “Inglourious Basterds” and “Nine.”
We’d also like to see “(500) Days of Summer,” “Invictus” and “An Education” get a nod. “The Hangover” would be an interesting addition, as would be “Up,” even though there’s already a dedicated animated film category.
For the best actress category, we’re pretty much guaranteed Sandra Bullock for “The Blind Side” with a Meryl Streep’s turn as Julia Child as a contender. Gabourey Sidibe of “Precious” and Carey Mulligan of “An Education” are worthy of recognition as well.
On the men’s side, Jeff Bridges in “Crazy Heart” and George Clooney in “Up in the Air” are expected. But the rest of the best actor race isn’t as clear. Jeremy Renner, Colin Firth, Morgan Freeman or Tobey Maguire? How about some Joseph Gordon-Levitt love?
We’ll be up before the birds as well, so check back with Zap2it for the nominations.
The 82nd Academy Awards will be telecast on ABC from the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday, March 7.
Who do you want nominated? Who’s been overrated this award season?
