outlander first look starz 'Outlander' creator takes seriously the responsibility of faithfully adaptating the novelsStarz is fulfilling the dreams of a legion of fans when it brings to life Diana Gabaldon‘s “Outlander” series, which tells the epic adventure/romance of modern-day Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe) and 18th-centure Scottish Highlander Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan).

With such a fervent fanbase, creator Ron Moore says that he feels a sense of responsibility to do the books justice — a responsibility he takes seriously.
“I saw my role from the beginning as not reinventing this material, but as adapting it and delivering it,” says Moore. “I take that obligation seriously. I want to give [fans] their story, but I do have to translate that to a different medium.”

Author Gabaldon adds, “To do a literal page-by-page translation to the screen would not be a very good TV show.”

However, the books are the source material and as such, that is where the writers always start and end.

“In the writers’ room, we always start with the book,” Moore says. “Maybe we have to change something, but we always take pains to get back to where the book takes us.”

We saw a sizzle reel of the series and let us reassure the fans — it looks fantastic. The actors also would like the fans to know that they love the built-in support that comes with tackling “Outlander.”

“It’s been really exciting, the fans have been really supportive and really welcoming,” Balfe says. “There’s a responsibility to do the best job you can do, but that’s with
every job. It’s just really nice to know that you have this built-in
audience that really want you to do well and they’re really supportive. … So often you have to start from scratch to get your audience in and get attention and we’re so lucky to have that built in.”

“It feels like we’re at the start of a really rewarding journey as well. … We feel like we’re right on the edge of this roller coaster and it’s a real thrill to be a part of it,” adds Heughan.

“Outlander” premieres on Starz in summer 2014.
