Discovery’s new series “Kurt Sutter’s Outlaw Empires” has provided some compelling looks inside criminal subcultures, and Monday’s (June 4) episode continues in that vein. “Sons of Anarchy” creator Sutter takes a look at one of the most notorious crime organizations in history: the Italian Mafia.

In this clip from the episode, which you can see exclusively on Zap2it, former Gambino crime family associate Dominick Montiglio describes how he set up a hit on a fellow mobster in Brooklyn in the 1970s. The re-enactment is pretty strong, but what makes it so chilling is Montiglio’s remembrance of his action, and how he waited up all night to hear the explosion.

We’re also struck by the fact that Montiglio apparently had few qualms about killing someone he’d known since childhood, but had the target not gone to his car that night, he would have returned to dismantle the makeshift car bomb because he didn’t want to endanger kids walking to school the next morning.

“Outlaw Empires” airs at 10 p.m. ET Monday on Discovery.
