lizzie caplan drink 'Party Down': Lizzy Caplan and Jimmi Simpson talk premiere detailsSeason 2 of the misanthropic comedy “Party Down” premieres Friday, April 23 on Starz. Zap2it was on the scene with the cast and creators at “The Rich Eat First” event at the Paley Center for Media to get the scoop on what’s coming up.

“It’s a show about people who refuse to give up the dream,” executive producer Rob Thomas says. “How long can you keep up the dream?”

The second season brings some major changes to the “Party Down” catering crew. Most notable is the absence of Jane Lynch, who, of course, left “Party Down” to join the cast of “Glee.” Her exit was not a surprise. “She was already signed up to do ‘Glee’ when we cast her,” Thomas says. “We only had about a week’s notice for when she had to leave.”

Luckily, the show had a fan in comedy legend Megan Mullally. “I found it around the third or fourth episode, sitting at home watching it with my husband,” Mullally says. “I was like, ‘What the f***! This show is really good! It’s on Starz? What’s happening?!'”

“There was a serendipitous moment [after Jane left] where we were crafting a stage mother character, and then we heard that Megan Mullally liked the show,” Thomas says.

“I think it’s twice as good now,” says star Adam Scott.

Another significant change behind the scenes of Season 2 is Scott’s new role as producer. “He wore a cravat,” Mullally says when asked how Scott fares in the job.

Co-star Lizzy Caplan chimes in, “Producer Adam is the worst. He’d say things like ‘Could you whip up a sandwich for Megan?”

“I never, ever did that!” Scott interrupts. “It was a smoothie.”

In the season premiere, Caplan’s character, Casey, dons her pink bow tie for the first time in six months after finishing a comedy gig on a cruise ship. Things aren’t as she left them, though — her once love-interest Henry (Adam Scott) is now the boss … and he’s dating rival caterer Uda Bengt (played by Kristen Bell, though she doesn’t appear in the episode.) Awkwardness abounds as the team tries to get through catering a backstage party for Jackal Onassis (Jimmi Simpson), a Marilyn Manson-style rocker, and his many, many groupies.

When we caught up with guest star Simpson, he shared his feelings about dressing up like Marilyn Manson and whether he’ll ever return to “Party Down.” Caplan dished on whether Casey’s dreams will ever come true — and whether she’s lying about a new boyfriend.
