Now, their show “An Evening With Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin” brings back fond memories of that show — just as a revival of “Evita” is gearing up to open, with Ricky Martin in Patinkin’s role of Che.

LuPone doesn’t mince words when it comes to her thoughts on the new show and Martin’s potential to live up to Patinkin’s performance.

“You know, I’ll tell you what I think in general about people who want to
make their Broadway debut that are not trained stage actors,” she says to NY Mag. “Don’t they
know, Broadway ain’t for sissies? It is a tough gig. You are
responsible, physically, mentally, emotionally, for eight shows a week,
at the top of your game. It’s not easy.”

That said, she’s not upset about the revival — in fact, she plans to see it. “Last night, I was nostalgic for the experience, and I can’t say I usually get nostalgic for the experience because it was a rough one for me,” she admits. “I would not go see a production of ‘Evita’ if it was a carbon copy of Hal [Prince’s 1979] production. But I am anxious to see this one. Mandy and I will definitely go see this production.”
