paul mccartney nirvana Paul McCartney replaces Kurt Cobain as Nirvana reunites for 12 12 12 benefit concert

There will be a Nirvana reunion of sorts during tonight’s 12-12-12 benefit concert that is raising money to help victims of Hurricane Sandy, except instead of Kurt Cobain, Paul McCartney is going to be acting as the lead singer. The former member of The Beatles will be rocking out with Dave Grohl, Pat Smear and Krist Novoselic during the NYC show, but he didn’t even realize what band the men were once in until someone pointed it out to him.

“I didn’t really know who they were. They are saying how good it is to be back together. I said: ‘Whoa? You guys haven’t played together for all that time?'” he recalls to The Guardian. “And somebody whispered to me: ‘That’s Nirvana. You’re Kurt.’ I couldn’t believe it.”

The group will reportedly play a new song that McCartney has been secretly working on with Grohl and Novoselic. In addition to those musicians, Bon Jovi, Billy Joel, Alicia Keys, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Eddie Vedder, Roger Waters, Kanye West and The Who are all slated to perform. The 12-12-12 concert is being held at Madison Square Garden and will air on IFC at 7:30 E.T. on Dec. 12.
