Penelope Cruz may set sail with Captain Jack Sparrow.
The Oscar winner is in talks to join Johnny Depp for the Rob Marshall-directed “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Depp will need another attractive leading lady since both Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom are out of the sequel. Not that Bloom is a lady, but some would say he’s pretty.
There’s not a lot of detail about Cruz’s proposed role, although she’s supposed to be able to go toe-to-toe with Captain Jack.
Cruz, who won an Academy Award for her supporting role in “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” is also up for another supporting nod for her work in another Marshall flick, “Nine.”
“Pirates” will shoot in Hawaii this summer and is aiming for a May 2011 release.
In other movie casting news, Susan Sarandon is in negotiations to star in the film version of “The Big Valley.” She’d be playing matriarch Victoria Barkley, a role that was originated by Barbara Stanwyck in the late ’60s TV series.
