lady gaga peta gi PETA lashes out against 'turncoat' Lady Gaga

Even a woman who voluntarily gathers “little monsters” might want to fear the animal-loving rage of PETA. The animal-rights organization has sent an open letter to Lady Gaga on the subject of her fur coats. Let’s just say that PETA is not so happy with the singer they now refer to as a “turncoat.”

Lady Gaga has been something of an anti-fur hero for PETA until her recent fashion choices. The PETA letter cites a comment made to Ellen DeGeneres (“I hate fur and I don’t wear fur.”) as well as Gaga’s support for gay rights.

What were Lady Gaga’s specific offenses? PETA lists three: a “wolf carcass” (for the “Machete Kills” movie poster), a peach-colored fox fur and hot-pink rabbit fur wrap. While most of us would cite these as crimes against fashion or against summer weather, PETA goes for the animal rights issue.

Amusingly, no one even knows whether or not the furs are real. PETA isn’t exactly cool with fake fur either, but the genuine article is much worse. PETA’s letter implies that Lady Gaga will be the focus of a new fall campaign unless there is an acceptable explanation for all of this.

PETA campaigns are never fun.

The singer herself has not been willing to comment one way or another on her fashion choices. Instead, because Lady Gaga doesn’t seem to care much what PETA — or anybody — thinks, she quickly responded on Twitter:

“For those press and such who are writing about whether or not my fur is actually real, please don’t forget to credit the designer HERMES. Thank You! LOVE, gaga”

That response, of course, manages to avoid answering any of PETA’s questions. And so the controversy will continue. It’s almost like Lady Gaga likes the press or something…
