pll note 2 'Pretty Little Liars': 5 theories about Toby's braille messageIf you haven’t watched the most recent episode of “Pretty Little Liars,” stop reading this article, fire up your DVR and rejoin us in about 45 minutes.

In the Feb. 7 episode, “Je Suis Un Ami,” Toby gave Spencer a note he found in Jenna’s room written in braille. On it, he wrote “I found this in Jenna’s room. You may be right.” After some digging (and quasi-learning the braille alphabet) we found out that the message is “#214,” which in letter form spells “#BAD.” Yes, we are that nerdy. Don’t judge us.

On her Twitter account, the show’s creator Marlene King tweeted a clue for fans to figuring out the message, “Clue, it may mean two different things.” Naturally, this got us to thinking about what the message actually means. Here are our top five theories (Warning, spoilers ahead!):

No. 1: #214

Curiously, next Monday’s (Feb. 14) episode is the season’s 14th episode. While we assume we will learn more about what the message means in the episode, the two doesn’t hit because the show is still in its first season.

No. 2: #214

What if the message is simply a locker number for a student who is somehow connected to Alison? Could this person be the thread that connects Spencer and Toby as well? Clearly, someone is trying to set both of them up.

No. 3: #2 AD

In our research, we read that the numeric symbol (#) only applies if it is before every character, so #2 is the number two, but if it doesn’t have the symbol before it, it is a letter. This is our craziest theory and our favorite.

Warning — Book spoilers ahead!

Alison’s full name is Alison DiLaurentis so her initials work for the letters. Could the “2” mean there are two Alisons? Does she have an identical twin the Liars never knew about?

No. 4: #BAD

In full letter form, the message means bad and with the symbol it becomes the perfect Twitter hashtag. Could this be a message for fans to be on the lookout for Twitter messages from the show that contain #Bad?

No. 5:
#214

Remember Toby’s tattoo, which was 9/01 (Sept. 1)? It symbolized the day Alison disappeared, but also the day his weird relationship thing with Jenna ended. Could the message symbolize Feb. 14? The episode actually airs on Feb. 14, so it is entirely possible that something is meant to happen on that date or something already happened on that date in the past. Could it be someone’s birthday? Or maybe the day Alison found out about Toby and Jenna or Alison and Ian’s anniversary?

Our brains hurt. We now know how Veronica Mars felt during every episode. What do you think the message means, Zappers?
