In the Season 2 finale of “Pretty Little Liars,” we finally found out that Mona (Janel Parrish) had been “A” all along — but learning the identity of their tormenter didn’t do much to ease the girls’ heartbreak. When the series returns tonight we’ll learn that for Hanna (Ashley Benson) especially, the revelation was deeply heartbreaking, as she’d considered Mona a close friend.
“That’s difficult to deal with,” Benson told us during a press day on the “PLL” set. “So now Hanna’s trying to figure out if it was her fault, what she did to make Mona kind of turn against her. It’s tough. She’s trying to figure out answers and what she can do to help. Her friend’s in this insane asylum and she’s trying to figure out what to do. She kind of feels lost. She has her other friends, but Mona was something different, and she’s not the person she thought she was.
After a summer spent apart from Mona and from the rest of her friends, Hanna decides to go visit Mona in the institution. She needs answers — because while Mona is firmly locked in a padded cell, Hanna and her friends are still getting messages.
“They’re still getting tortured by somebody else,” she tells us. “And how can it be her? She’s locked up. [Hanna] is just trying to find out who [Mona] is working with and what’s going on.”
“She wants some answers and probably some closure,” Parrish adds. “They were best friends for years and she feels very betrayed. New things are happening in Rosewood where Hanna wants to know if I’m involved, what I know. It’ll be bumpy. The interaction will be kind of turbulent… Hanna comes in and you can see her kind of screaming and throwing a chair over… It’ll be a little intense.”
Despite Hanna’s apparent guilt over Mona’s situation, there’s no hope of reconnecting with Mona. “It’s not even really to rebuild a friendship because it’s kind of done after everything that happened,” Benson says. “I don’t even know if there will be a friendship again. We’ll see as it goes down. As for now we just want answers.”
Hanna isn’t the only one who needs to talk to Mona. “There will be a couple more visitors,” teases Parrish. “I can’t say who, but it’ll be really fun.”
Emily (Shay Mitchell) may also need to say her piece, as she is still reeling from the loss of her first love, Maya, who died in the Season 2 finale. “I think Emily very much wants to,” Mitchell says. “As far as whether she’s actually going to get in that room, might not be the best idea.”
Emily has been doing her best to clear her head, and took the summer away from Rosewood to get some fresh perspective. “For her two months, she was in Haiti, building houses,” Mitchell tells us. “All the girls did their own thing for the summer.”
Emily does believe that Maya’s death is connected with A and Mona. “In Emily’s mind, the way that the character’s being played is that she does think it’s from A and that A is the one that killed her. She is not too happy with her.”
