“Project Runway” designer Beatrice Guapo, the first one booted from the show’s tenth anniversary season, should’ve gone with her gut. She tells Zap2it the morning after her elimination that she wished she would’ve stuck to her design aesthetic.
“I think one thing I didn’t do was go with your instinct, with your aesthetic. That’s probably your saving grace with everything,” she tells reporters on a conference call. “I wished that I had done more of what they liked on my rack, which is more me, what got me on. I think I should’ve stuck with what I do best.”
Still, she had a great time during her short tenure on the show. “Overall, I really enjoyed it,” she confesses. “I love the designers. Everybody has a really strong personality and they’re really funny. We were laughing a lot. … It was a great experience.”
So, who of the remaining 15 contestants could she see winning? “I think it’s too early,” she says. “I definitely think I have a top 3, but for the most part I think it’s still anybody’s bag right now.”
Guapo’s frontrunners are challenge winner Christopher Palu, top three finishers Ven Budhu and Melissa Fleis, and Dmitry Sholokhov. “I’ve got a top 4, I guess!”
Although she left too early to really forge long-lasting relationships — she hasn’t really kept in touch with any of her fellow designers — Guapo says a highlight was meeting mentor Tim Gunn.
“Meeting Tim Gunn was an awesome moment,” she says. “I think he brings so much to the show and you really do trust his opinion. He just always has a great approach to everything. A really great vibe.”
Being the first to go on a reality show is always difficult, and Zap2it asked Guapo if the knowledge that two of her fellow designers dropped out of the competition a few weeks after her exit was frustrating.
“I don’t know anything about anybody leaving,” she says. “At this time, I’m already off, so I’ve pretty much accepted it by now.”
“Project Runway” airs Thursday nights at 9 p.m. on Lifetime.
Should Beatrice have been the first designer to hear Heidi Klum’s “auf wiedersehen”?
