puss in boots 2 'Puss in Boots' sets Halloween box office record (for now)The new all-time Halloween weekend box-office champion is not a horror movie, but an animated film about a fairy-tale cat.

“Puss in Boots” made an estimated $34 million in its opening weekend. If that figure holds up, it will become the highest-grossing opener on a Halloween weekend ever. The current record is held by “Saw III,” which made $33.6 million on its 2006 opening.

The $34 million take for “Puss in Boots” is pretty much in line with forecasts after it made $9.6 million on Friday. Most predictions had it in the $35 million range, but snow in the Northeast may have kept the movie’s take a little lower than it would have otherwise been.

Last week’s winner, “Paranormal Activity 3,” took a steep but not unexpected 65-percent drop. It still made $18.35 million, though, and finished second for the weekend. “In Time” finished third with an estimated $12 million, while the weekend’s third wide release, “The Rum Diary,” was a disappointing fifth with just $5 million. “Anonymous,” the William Shakespeare conspiracy drama, pulled in $1 million in limited release.
