queen latifah 2012 gi Queen Latifah: I wasn't coming out at gay festivalDespite much conjecture, Queen Latifah says that her recent performance at the Long Beach Lesbian & Gay Pride Festival does not mean that she’s gay.

The rapper/actress tells Entertainment Weekly, “That definitely wasn’t the case…I’ve never dealt with the question of my personal life in public. It’s just not gonna happen.”

Speculation spread after Latifah — real name Dana Owens — signed on for the May 19 event. And the rumors got louder after she said she was proud to be among “my people” during her performance. But the 42-year old says people shouldn’t read too much into any of this.

“To me, doing a gay pride show is one of the most fun things,” she explains. “My first show that paid more than $10,000 was in a gay club on New Year’s Eve in San Francisco…we had a blast in there.”

Latifah, who will be in a upcoming remake of “Steel Magnolias” on Lifetime, had words of encouragement for her gay fans.

“I know that the most important thing and the only thing I have to give is love. When people are going through hatred and bullying, the biggest thing to fight that is love,” she says. “So that’s all I encouraged my audience to do that night: to share their light and share their love.”
