randy travis heart surgery Randy Travis 'responding well to voices,' says fiancee Mary DavisCountry music singer Randy Travis is in critical but stable condition after he was hospitalized last week for a viral cardiomyopathy and subsequently suffered a stroke, which required emergency surgery to relieve pressure in his brain. But doctors tell Reuters that the singer is looking at months of recovery.

“He is awake and alert and interacting with his family and friends, and beginning to start doing some early physical therapy,” says Dr. Gary Erwin, a pulmonologist at the Dallas hospital where Travis is being treated. “We anticipate it will take months to recover from the stroke.”

Doctors add that Travis chronic cardiomyopathy runs in his family and does not appear to have been caused by drugs or alcohol. The doctors hope to remove Travis from the ventilator soon and are slowly decreasing his intravenous medications.

“He is responding well to voices and he sees and he understands. He is miles beyond where any of us thought he would be a few days ago,” says Mary Davis, Travis’ fiancee.
