Actress Reese Witherspoon has signed on to star in Atom Egoyan’s “Devil’s Knot,” an upcoming film about the West Memphis Three. Witherspoon is set to play Pam Hobbs, the mother of one of three 8-year-old boys who were murdered in West Memphis, Arkansas in 1993, TheWrap reports.
The term “West Memphis Three” refers not to the boys who were killed, but to the three teenagers who were tried and convicted of the murders, Damien Echols, Jessie Misskelley and Jason Baldwin. During the trial, they were accused of killing the boys as part of a satanic ritual.
In 2007, DNA evidence from the crime scene that could not be attributed to the West Memphis Three or the boys was brought to light. The three men were released from prison after having served 18 years.
The film is based on journalist Mara Leveritt’s book “Devil’s Knot: The True Story of the West Memphis Three.”
