Regis Philbin announced on the air Tuesday morning (Jan. 18) that he would be retiring from “Live With Regis and Kelly” this year after nearly 25 years on the air. He reassured all the loyal viewers that the show would continue, as ABC plans to name a new co-host to join Kelly Ripa. Regis and Kelly have been hosting together for 10 years.
Philbin did not specify a departure date just yet, but he said he would be leaving around the end of the summer or fall. The 79-year-old TV personality has recently had to take time off from his hosting duties to have a blood clot removed from his leg, hip replacement surgery and triple bypass heart surgery.
Regis is a three-time Daytime Emmy winner, received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2003 and was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in 2008.
We’ll miss you, Reege. And we can’t wait for the shenanigans surrounding finding Kelly’s new co-host. We nominate Jerry O’Connell.
