On the band’s website Thursday (Sept. 6), lead singer Michael Stipe says, “We have little or no respect for their puff adder brand of reportage. Our music does not belong there.”

Fox News cheekily used R.E.M.’s song as a way of commenting on the perceived lack of faith at the DNC.

And R.E.M. isn’t the first musical act to push back against the use of their music in the political arena this election season. The Silversun Pickups sent Mitt Romney’s campaign a cease-and-desist letter for using the song “Panic Switch” at an event. And Twisted Sister’s Dee Snider asked that Paul Ryan stop playing “We’re Not Gonna Take It” during campaign stops.
