Milla Jovovich is back as Alice in “Resident Evil: Retribution” on September 14th, 2012. She’ll once again be the bane of the undead everywhere. We were lucky enough to get to chat with her at Wondercon 2012 in Anaheim, CA. These films have been wildly popular and she tells us that the newest installment begins right where the last one left off. She also looked ravishing with her short haircut that is now shaved up one side.
We wanted to know about why she thinks the films have been so popular with fans. “I think having a husband (director Paul W.S. Anderson) that is totally into these games makes it really easy,” she says. She mentioned that they both play the game for hours on end.
She says that her dreams in real life actually make it into the film here and there. “It’s always been based on this organic feeling. For instance, I’ll have a dream. I had a dream that I was diving down this elevator shaft. He’ll say, ‘Oh, that’s cool. There’s a place for that in the script.’ And then you’ll get the scene from number four where I did the needle dive. It’s always really natural. We love it and we live in it.”
Dreams? You’d assume working on a film like this would give you nightmares! Jovovich tells us that she has them. “I haven’t had a zombie nightmare in a month! But I do have them constantly during filming. It definitely takes a part of our subconscious. I think it’s wonderful,” she says, laughing. “Zombies always give me nightmares.”
There are quite a few fight scenes. They’re intense. Some of the most complex action sequences I’ve done in an action film. We got a lot of inspiration from Thai cinema. People in that word make brutal contact with each other. It’s really violent and raw. In 3-D, you really have to hit people to sell it. I’ve been trained my whole life not to hit someone during a scene, and now they’re like, ‘Hit them, Mila! Just hit them!’
